Higher-level Maths Achievement
Support for schools to raise attainment and progression in maths for disadvantaged students

Who can take part?

This joint project between Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) and the Mathshub is a great opportunity, aimed at teachers in secondary schools with a high proportion of disadvantaged students, especially those teaching pupil premium students with higher prior attainments.

Schools must commit to releasing at least one teacher to attend all sessions, as well as the staff to bring students to attend the student days.

What is involved?

These Work Groups are designed to help schools increase the number of students - particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds - achieving higher grades in GCSE Mathematics and progressing to study maths at Level 3.

Participants will work with local colleagues, supported by their Maths Hub and the AMSP, to explore strategies and teaching approaches that promote high attainment and motivation.

Sessions will include collaborative planning and reflection, with opportunities to adapt and trial high-impact tasks in the classroom to deepen understanding of challenging areas of the secondary maths curriculum.

There are three elements that schools will take part in:

  1. Professional development through the Maths Hub Work Group. Sessions will focus on subject pedagogical knowledge and the implementation of change, to help teachers inspire students and teach demanding GCSE content with confidence and share best practice with their departments.

  2. Student Study Days focused on mastering demanding topics, developing mathematical problem-solving skills and preparing for GCSE questions. There will be two Year 11 days and two Year 10 days, they will be run locally.

  3. Bespoke support for schools including the AMSP Local Lead working with the maths department and sharing strategies and evidence-based advice with teachers and school leaders.

What will you learn?

  • Your students will develop the deep understanding needed for higher GCSE grades

  • You and your school will embed a culture of high expectations and equitable access to challenging maths topics

  • Your students will have a greater awareness of progression opportunities in post-16 maths

  • You will trial and reflect on practical classroom tasks designed to stretch and engage students

  • You will collaborative with colleagues to develop approaches that promote high-level mathematical thinking

What is the cost?

The Higher-level Maths Achievement project is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.
